Diving with wild sharks in the Maldives

When you have spent a year exploring some of the best beaches and diving sites in the world, it really takes something special to blow you away. After the amazing colours of the sea in Coron in the Philippines and the crystal clear waters of Koh Tao, I thought I had seen it all, but another great Adventure was about to start.

Having arrived on the island of Fulidhoo, we decided to take one of their snorkelling trips. We had seen tiny reef sharks in the water by the shore, so when they mentioned we would be seeing sharks, I just assumed it would be these little 40cm babies. I was wrong. Having pulled up in the boat at our first snorkelling spot, I jumped in an eagerly began exploring. Having seen some huge fish, I dived down beneath the waves to get a better look.

And then it happened. About 3 meters in-front of me was a 3 meters long shark. It was a sight that I had never expected, or probably wanted to see. Frozen in the moment I watched as the shark swam nonchalantly past me. If he knew I was there, he didn’t seem to care. I saw almost a dozen sharks, swimming calmly amongst the fish. The sharks in question were nurse sharks, who thankfully do not consider humans as a food source. What an incredible adventure!

We stayed at this place for what seemed like minuets, but was probably closer to an hour. No nets. No cages. Just a window into an amazing world I had never seen before. We even got to watch them being fed. After retreating to a safe distance. But the water in the Maldives is so clear I may as well have been standing next to them.
