Meeting the Portuguese Stonemen in Lisbon

Digna, Lisbon 2017

The best way to discover a city is with a local. This summer I was on Holiday with my family at the Algarve Coast in Portugal and my friend Ana who is born and raised in Lisbon invited us to visit her beautiful city. And so we did.

In August the temperature can be over 40 degrees Celsius, so we were lucky only to defy 37 degrees. Ana took us to the oldest parts of Lisbon, Alfama, Baixa and Chiado. At the Elevator of Santa Justa, she told the story about the big fire in 1988 who destroyed Chiado, the old shopping neighborhood of Lisbon. She also told us about the fishermen’s women who were so sad when their husbands did not come back from the sea, they were singing sad songs, now famous as the Fado, the Portugese song of life.

What I never found in the city guides or on internet where the “Stonemen” of Lisbon. Down the river, not far away from the plaza Comércio Square at the Av. Ribeira das Naus you can see those amazing creations. A man, age about 65, is day after day at the river to create new stonemen or to change the setting. He does this since he was a child to cheer up the hurrying people who go to work every day and look shaky.

This place is so special. The setting of the big important plaza, the river and the lonely man with his colored stonemen. We were tired and hot after running around in Lisbon and decided to chill at the river. My husband, my son, my bonus twins and Ana and her boyfriend who was born in my village in the Netherlands, all seven of us relaxed with our feet in the water, looking to the other side of Lisbon, Almada.

Whoever goes to Lisbon has to go to this special place to see the stonemen .
